What Are You Running Into?

thThis post is about “into” – more specially what are we “into” regarding our lives.  So I ask you, what are you ‘into’? Bicycling, fishing, gardening, sewing and other crafts, music perhaps?  Then it comes down to how often you engage in these activities etc.  What about reading; there are all different topics available to us; mysteries, adventure, travel, cooking; you see how diverse our interests can be.  How about the Bible, is it a priority on your reading lists?

Proverbs 18:10, the name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous run into it and is safe.  (MEV)

When I saw the word ‘into’ I saw two possible things that can happen.  The first was that a person actually comes in contact with the tower (house, etc) and gets hurt, and the second is that they actually get inside the tower (house) for safety.  Maybe I’ve watched too many cartoons!  Hah!

Seriously though, when our thinking, behavior, words and motives are not what they should be and we run ‘into’ the truth of the Word of God, it’s like hitting a wall and we have a decision to make.  We can either stay with our own way of doing things OR we can change and conform to God’s way of thinking, speaking, doing things and having His motives.  We cannot have it both ways. Either we change and grow in the glory of God’s Word or we stay (or worsen) in our own way(s) and continue to have problems.  In Him we have victory, without Him we have defeat.

There are three definitions of the word “into”:

  1. To the inside of
  2. State, condition, or form of
  3. Against

Do you see the significance here in these definitions in regard to our relationship with God?  I can.  To get into God’s tower of protection and safety we must come to terms with our condition: either not being His child or being His child and not obeying His Word. We can either stand in faith with our words and the way we live or we come against God’s Word by our words and behavior and the way we live.  Both are testimonies of the condition of our heart.  What condition is your heart in?

The Bible tells us in Hebrew 13:5 that Jesus is always the same, He never changes.  So guess who gets to do the changing? We do!  Yeah!  That’s a good thing because everyone wants to be and do better; and we can only do that with Jesus in the center of our heart overseeing our motives, thoughts, words, and behavior.  We also read in Psalm 91:1-2 that it is the person who dwells in the shelter of the Most High who rests in the shadow of the Almighty; it is that person who confesses that God is his refuge and fortress, and that he trusts in God.

I love this chapter (Psalm 91) for encouragement for safety and protection.  Reading it often and meditating on its truths brings peace to our heart and mind.  This is my assignment to you this week – read Psalm 91 every day and meditate on it and receive from God the peace He wants you to live in.  Run “into” His shelter of love, mercy, forgiveness, grace and protection, and live the life abundantly that Jesus said He came to give you.  (John 10:10)
