SEEK GOD FIRST

This week is short but I believe its where our hearts should always be: seeking God first.  One of my favorite Scriptures is Matthew 6:33. The reason I love this Scripture so much is the truth and accountability it brings to my heart in setting priorities in my life.  It’s so simple that many people miss the importance of this command and commitment. To me the blessings I receive from placing God first in my life far outweigh any sacrifice of turning off the TV or social media, or even time spent on hobbies. I personally think far too much time is wasted by these distractions.   I encourage you to monitor how you spend your time and see where you too could increase your time in prayer and fellowship with God.

The version I read most often is the New King James Version: But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

-I think of it this way: when I seek God – to praise and worship Him for who He is and what He has done for me;

-When I seek His righteousness: which comes to me through the Salvation His offers in Jesus, my attitude, words, and motives more easily line up with His will for my life;

-When I continually keep God first in my life, acknowledging Him and His Son Jesus as the primary focus in my heart, He clarifies, cleanses and purifies the desires of my heart.  My words are spoken more softly, lovingly, and truthfully, which in turn makes me a blessing to others and brings glory to God.

Below are several versions of Matthew 6:33 and though they are worded a little differently, the message and instruction is quite clear.

Amplified Bible, Classic Edition: But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.

Christian Standard Bible: But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.

Easy-to-Read Version:  What you should want most is God’s kingdom and doing what he wants you to do.  Then he will give you all these other things you need.

The clear message is that we are to seek God first and put God first in our life.  The “other things” mentioned in these Scriptures are found in the previous verses (25-31).  Clearly, we are not to worry about what we are to eat, or wear, or drink.  When we seek God first, He provides for these needs and also the desires of our heart that line up with His Word.  God is Good, so obviously our desires are to be good, without pride, without jealousy, and without wrong motives.  We are to put God first in every area of our lives.  Check your heart’s desire; monitor you schedule; make more time for God.

    Wholeheartedly agree, Mary! Times where I have failed to do this are always filled with regret, but never once have I regretted time well spent in the presence of my God, first thing. We are just finishing up our three weeks of prayer and fasting as a church and it has been a wonderful reset. ❤️
