The Power of the Tongue

Some people may think that our words are only powerful when speaking the Word of God, but that isn’t what the Bible says. Proverbs 18:21 says there is life and death in the power of the tongue. That means, whether positive or negative, the words we speak are powerful to produce fruit in our lives. We need to monitor our words at all times; we need to be word watchers.

Our words produce our future. What we say today is what we have tomorrow, as the saying goes. The problem is that the results of our words don’t always manifest as quick as tomorrow. People don’t always make the connection of a problem they have today with the words they’ve spoken yesterday, or two, three or more years previously. If they don’t see immediate “proof” of their words, negative or positive, they think there is no truth in this Scripture, but God’s Word is always true. Please understand it’s just not the once-in-awhile words we are talking about but those we are continually saying. To change our words we must change our thinking and to change our thinking we must continually be renewing our mind to the Word of God. (Romans 12:2)

We need to learn to bring those “idle words” under the correction and submission to what the Bible says.  Matthew 12:36-37 teaches that we will give an account for every idle word we speak; that we are either justified or condemned by our words. Several other Bible translations call them careless or empty words; which means they don’t produce godly fruit. Idle words then fall under the category of words that don’t line up with Bible truths.

Proverbs 23:7 tells us that “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he”. Learn to think before you speak in order to monitor what you are about to say so you can make corrections in the quality of your words. We must fill our heart (spirit) with the Word of God in order to produce what the Word says it will. Our thoughts have their basis in our heart – or our spirit.

Matt 12:34 and Luke 6:45 give us the answer to how to solve this problem of how to monitor our words: “for out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”  The only way we can keep our words in check is to monitor what goes into our heart via what we hear and see. We need to read, study, pray, and hear the Word of God to be able renew our mind to the God’s Word, and when we do that, our spirit will monitor our words, and then our words will bring forth good fruit – good results in our lives.

My purpose in writing this short message on how important our words are is to remind and encourage you (and myself) to be more aware of what we are saying so we won’t give the enemy any advantage in our lives to steal, kill and destroy. We can walk in the blessings of God, and the more our words are in agreement with God’s Word, the more we are in a position to receive God’s best for us.

My thoughts exactly! Once said words leave an impact either positive or negative and they can’t be unsaid!
