The Eyes Of Your Heart

During my quiet time this morning I heard the words, “the eyes of your heart.” We understand that when we see clearly with our natural eyes, we know how to walk correctly down the sidewalk, avoiding rough edges of the concrete that would otherwise trip us. It is the same with our spiritual eyes. When we see clearly with the Word of God of how He wants us to walk through this life, we can avoid the spiritual pitfalls of the rough terrain of temptations, the lust and deceitfulness of our heart.

This brings us to the fact that we must have Jesus in our heart as our Savior, because righteousness comes from Him, through His sacrificial death on the Cross and resurrection from the dead. It is our faith in Him that gives us righteousness; it is that righteousness manifesting in our heart that gives us clear spiritual eyesight that overflows into our natural life. How we see things is dependent on the condition of our heart.

If our heart is filled with darkness then we interpret our surroundings with the evidence of darkness – fear, hate, envy, jealousy, covetousness, greed, lust, etc. However, on the flip side, if our heart is filled with the Light of God, our heart is filled with faith, love, kindness, generosity, etc. Light always disperses darkness; giving us clear understanding and thinking of how to walk to make good and correct decisions. Whatever we fill our heart with determines how we see things; either negative or positive; whether with fear or with faith.

When we take joy in the precepts of the Lord, then His commands are a delight to obey and His radiance is seen in our eyes. (Psalm 19:8) When our heart is right before the Lord, then with sincerity and reverence of our heart we seek His approval, and not that of others. (Colossians 3:22) I find it amazing how the condition of our heart is so closely connected to our walk of obedience to God’s Word.

As I meditated on those few words – eyes of your heart – I began to pray this prayer for myself – and then realized I should also pray it for you too.

“Open the eyes of our heart, O’ Lord, that we may see and understand Your Word so we will have wisdom to know how to apply the power of Your Word to and over our lives. O’ God, let us see early the snares and traps the devil is devising against us that we may walk clear of them. Lord, give us early discernment of words we are about to say so we may speak truth with love, and with soft answers.” (Ephesians 4:15, Proverbs 15:1)

According to Ephesians 1:18-19, when our eyes of our heart are enlightened, we will know the hope of his calling, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his great power for us who believe. Hallelujah!

May the eyes of your heart bring understanding and obedience to the Word of God, to Jesus, our Lord and Savior, and to God Almighty.
