Your Seedtime and Harvest (Part 2)

Last week’s lesson was about how our decisions work like seeds that produce harvests in our lives. The Bible tells us that everything begins with a seed; friendship for friendship; kindness for kindness, etc. We also know that every seed must be watered and weeded so it can grow properly and produce the harvest it’s meant to produce. This week we are studying how to “water and weed” our seeds of decisions so we can have good harvests. We must understand that if we want to make godly decisions, we must know God’s Word.

Our thoughts are like seeds, and therefore, it is of the utmost importance to monitor our thoughts. We need to water our good thoughts so they will grow and produce good harvests; and we need to weed out the bad thoughts. As we discussed last week, seeds produce after itself. If a person thinks negatively then they will speak negatively and harvest negatively; if a person thinks positively then they will speak positively and harvest positively; that’s common knowledge in the world. When a person thinks ungodly then that is what they speak and what they reap. When a person thinks godly, then that is what they speak and reap. When we add our faith to God’s truths, the harvests become supernatural! Of course, it stands to reason, that to know which thoughts should be watered and which should be weeded, we must know what the Bible says.

To “water” the good seeds of our thoughts, we must “attend to God’s Word, keeping His Word before our eyes, for they are life to us and health to our bodies.” (Proverbs 4:20-22) One of the best habits I developed when I was first learning about the Bible, was from a teaching on what we should think about, taken from Philippians 4:8. I called it my measuring stick for my thoughts. It changed the course – or way – that I thought, and therefore changed my words and the harvest from my words. My life was turned around. Proverbs 23:7 teaches that what we think in our heart is the way we will be. So, monitor your thoughts to keep them in agreement with God’s Word.

To “weed” out the bad seeds of thoughts, we must “cast down imaginations, and every high thing (thought) that exalts itself against the knowledge of God” (2 Corinthians 10:5). Did you catch that last part, the “knowledge of God?” Here again we are told that we need to know God’s Word. I heard a teaching many years ago that “we can’t keep a bird from flying over our head, but we can keep it from making a nest.” In other words, if our thoughts are against God’s Word, stop thinking those thoughts, and begin speaking to them with a rebuttal using the Word of God, “It is written _____.”  That follows Jesus’ example from Matthew 4:3-10.

If thoughts are bombarding you about sickness and disease, combat them with, “It is written in First Peter 2:24 that by the stripes of Jesus I am healed.” If it is about finances, speak to them, “It is written in Malachi 3:10-11, that when I tithe, God will open the windows of heaven and pour me out a blessing, and that He will rebuke the devourer for my sake.” I think you can get the picture of how it is done from those examples. Please understand that this is a way of life and not just once-in-awhile-obedience.

Another truth to understand about reaping a good harvest has to do with not pulling up our seeds of faith. We plant God’s Word in our heart by reading the Bible, mediating on Scripture, and praying. Our faith is watered and nourished by continuing to hear and hear and hear the Word of God. (Romans 10:7) We must guard against becoming weary in our believing while waiting to see the harvest. Whether we are believing for healing, finances, a newer car, a home, or a different job, we must not allow doubt to enter our thinking by wavering in our thoughts and spilling over into our words. Wavering and doubting are opposite of faith and cause us to be unstable in all areas of our life. (James 1:6-8) Hebrews 10:23 encourages us to hold fast the profession (or confession) of our faith without wavering.

I say again: monitor your thoughts, your words, and actions; water the good with confessions of God’s Word, and you will receive good harvests of blessings in your life.
