Quit Coasting

How many of you remember riding your bike during the summer? Sometimes you’d pedal slow and sometimes pedal fast, and then just sit and coast for a while.

When we are coasting the bike we are still moving forward from the momentum from our past pedaling. This may work a very short time but eventually that bike is going to slow down and come to a complete stop.

Now let’s compare this picture with our walk with God. Are we slow or quick to answer and obey His calling? Or are we just “coasting” on our past momentum of past Bible reading, prayer, study, worship, and church attendance. We may be able to coast for a short time without refreshing ourselves in the Word but eventually our faith will become weak and possibly not function correctly at all. We must keep moving forward with God. Bible reading, studying, church attendance and our praise and worship to God are so very important to keep our relationship with Him steady and on course. To be quite honest I’m not so sure there is such a thing as spiritual coasting because we are either going forward with God or we are falling behind. And if there is such a thing, then I’m thinking that spiritual coasting quite possibly could be considered more like being lukewarm and that is not a good place for God to find us. (Revelation 3:16)

So how do we keep from coasting along in our walk with God? How do we maintain our relationship with God true and steady?

Joshua 1:8 has the key: we are to keep the book (the Bible) before us day and night so we will observe to do according to all that is written in it. This is the way we make our way prosperous and have good success.

Psalm 139:23-24 shows us to ask God to search us and know our heart to see if there is any wicked way in us.

Psalm 51:10 reminds us to ask God to create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us.

Matthew 6:33 instructs us to seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.

2 Peter 1:13 and 3:1 encourages us to stir up ourselves and each other by way of remembrance; that is of course remembering the Word of God.

Let’s be fervent in our search for God’s will in our lives; guarding our heart from apathy (coasting) and stir ourselves up to be strong in the Word and to be prepared for times of ministry.
