Most Assuredly

thI’ve been reading the book of John these past few days and began to realize how many times Jesus used the phrase “Most assuredly”.   This week’s post is a little different because I’m making short comments on a few of these Scriptures with “most assuredly”, but have listed the others at the bottom.  My hope is that you will take the time to look these Scriptures up in your own Bible, meditate on them and allow God to minister to you the truths from His Word.  So let’s begin.

The New King James version records Jesus using the phrase “Most assuredly” 25 times.  The English Standard Version uses the phrase “Truly, Truly”.  The King James Version has, “Verily, verily”.  Saying the word twice is putting such an emphasis on what He is about to say so those listening would pay close attention.   But before we examine what He said let’s look at the meaning of these phrases.

Most assuredly:  Most means “to a very great degree or the greatest number or part.  Assuredly is defined as “to state confidently”.

Truly, truly: Truly means in agreement with fact, accurately.

Verily, verily:  Verily is described as “in very truth, certainly”.  Certainly means “fixed, indisputable, reliable, and settled.  Very is defined as, “absolute, or in actual fact”.

John: 3:3-5 –  Nicodemus was a Pharisee, a ruler of the Jews, and came by night to talk with Jesus.  He recognized Jesus as a teacher from God and that He couldn’t do the signs that He did unless God was with Him.  Responding to Nicodemus Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”.  When Nicodemus questioned how can a man be born when he is old, Jesus answered, “Most assuredly” unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

John 5:19 – When the Jews sought to kill Jesus because they thought He broke the Sabbath by healing a man on the Sabbath, and made himself equal with God. (Verse 18)  Jesus answered:  “most assuredly” the son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do, for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.

John 6:26-40 – Jesus is teaching those who followed him from the day before when he fed the 5,000 that they were not seeking Him so much as seeking more food for their stomachs; correcting them in the fact that the Father was giving them the true bread from Heaven; “for the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”   In verse 35 He makes the statement we all have heard many times, “I am the bread of life”.   Then in verse 38 he tells them, “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me”.  Verse 47: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life”.

We too must not only must recognize Jesus as a teacher but know, understand and believe that Jesus is the Son of God, the Savior of the world.  Each person must receive him (accept Him as Savior).  We must be careful to avoid seeking just the blessings of God but to seek Him for who He is, who He wants to be in our lives, and who He wants us to be.  All that Jesus did was because of the authority His Father gave Him.  All that we are to do is because of the authority Jesus gives us, of who we are IN HIM.

Jesus “most assuredly” believed that He came from God His Father that He confidently stated that He only did what He saw the Father do. When we read the Gospels of how Jesus interacted with others, we see the love of God for God is love and He loves us.  We see how we are to live and how we are to do minister to others the truth and love of God.

Dear Heavenly Father, as we read and meditate on the “most assuredly” Scripture passages, open our eyes to the profound truths of what Jesus is teaching so that we may truly live according to Your Word.
