The Lamp And The Light

downloadHow is your vision, do you see clearly with the right wisdom for all the decisions you need to make each day? When darkness comes in the evening, we know to turn on the lamps to give us light to have that clear vision of those things around us.  We need the inner spiritual light of God’s Word in order to make decisions with clarity and understanding for our natural lives. The Bible declares that Jesus is the light of the world in John 8:12.

The Bible declares that God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path in Psalm 119:105. Jesus is referred to as the Word of God in John 1:1-3, and the Word make flesh in verse 14.

First, God’s Word is a “lamp”.  A lamp is a vessel of the projected light. The way I see this is that without the lamp of God in our heart we simply do not have the clarity we need to take the very next steps with our feet in living for Him.

Secondly, God’s Word is a “light”. Light is actually the source and power of seeing. A light makes vision possible. Light always disperses darkness. Vision is not just physical sight but also includes the purpose and plan God has for our lives. It is only with the Light of God in our heart that we can know His plan and purpose for our life.

You can have a lamp in your living room but if it doesn’t have the source hooked up to it, there will be no power and therefore no light to see where to walk around and miss the mistakes that are right in front of you.  The Word of God works the same way. You can have the lamp of God in your home – the Bible on the coffee table, but if you are not hooked up to Him in your heart (Jesus as your Savior) and in daily fellowship of reading His Word and praying, you simply won’t have the power to walk according to His Word and miss the mistakes that are right in front of you. Simply, huh!

Physical light gives us the ability to see things naturally.  Spiritual light gives us the ability to see thing supernaturally. Each affects the other. How we live in the natural reflects the spiritual depth of, or lack of, our fellowship with God the Father. The closer we are in fellowship with God the Father the more closely we live according to His Word which commands us to love one another; to be kind to each other, and to speak the truth in love, to name a few. (John 13:34-35; Ephesians 4:15, 32)

We are to understand the Word of God so we can walk in His blessings and bring glory to Him.  When a person accepts Jesus as Savior, God’s Lamp and Light (Jesus) enters their heart giving them enlightenment, understanding and wisdom of His Word. Whether they walk in that knowledge is totally dependent upon how much they seek God’s presence for their life.

Therefore, to walk securely in this life we need Jesus as our Lamp and Light in our heart, and we need the daily renewing our mind with His Word.
