Lights of Christmas

When we begin the celebration of the Christmas season each year, we usually begin with the Christmas Tree with its many lights.  We also put decorative lights on the trees and bushes in our yard and on our homes. Some are solid colors of red, green, blue, or white or a combination of the colors. All these lights remind me of God because First John 1:5 tell us that “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”  Let me share with you what the Christmas lights mean to me.

The white lights: remind me of the purity and holiness of God. Proverbs 30:5 teaches us that “every word of God is pure; he is a shield to them that put their trust in him.”  We also learn from Leviticus 19:2 and Psalm 99:9 that we are to be holy: for the Lord our God is holy; we are to exalt the Lord our God and worship Him for He is holy. So, the white lights keep me in remembrance to live holy and pure before God.

The blue lights: remind me of the royalty of Jesus; His deity as the Son of God, who was sent to earth to be the Savior of the World, so the world would not be condemned for its sins but receive the gift of Salvation through faith in Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. (John 3:16-17) The blue lights make me aware that I have been made royalty by the Blood of Jesus, as First Peter 2:9 says: but you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people, that you should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. It is because of Jesus that we can come into the family of God. So, the blue lights cause me to think, act, and speak like a child of God.

The red lights: remind me of the Blood of Jesus that He shed on the Cross for our sins, paying the penalty of the sins of the world, and making it possible that we shall be made righteous by faith. (Romans 5:17-19; 10:9-10) His Blood cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:7) And if we do sin, we learn in First John 1:9 that we can confess our sins to Jesus and that He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. So, the red lights are not only the reminder that Jesus gave His life for me to be saved, but, that as a saved Christian, I should live my life to bring glory and honor to Him.

The green lights: remind me of eternal life in Jesus; for God so loved us that He sent His Son Jesus to give us everlasting life. He has made us righteous through Jesus, and to be heirs and joint-heir with Jesus to all the promises in the Bible; to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. (John 3:16-17; Romans 8:17 and Colossians 1:12-13) So, the green lights keep me aware of the fact that I have a heavenly home that God has prepared for me, and that I will live forever with Him.

My prayer for you this week is that you too, know the real meaning of the reason for the season – that the Son of God is Jesus Christ, the Savior and Lord of all.
