Light Dispels Darkness

We first read in the Bible about light in Genesis 1:1-3.
1) God created the heavens and the earth.
2) The earth was without form and void; and darkness was over the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3) Then God said, “Let there be light, and there was light.
When it says the earth was without form and void and darkness was over the earth, its talking about the unordered conditions on earth before God made it habitable for man. God changed the unordered form and arranged it in order with definite arrangement and structure.
When God said, “Let there be light” everything changed! Why. Because light always dispels darkness. Darkness is the absence of light. Even a candle or small flashlight shining in the darkest cave will overtake darkness. Darkness gives way to the light. Darkness can never overpower light BUT light always overpowers darkness.
John 1:5 says, The Light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has never overpowered it (put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it). (AMPC) To absorb something means to take in and make part of an existent whole. Darkness can never change light into darkness; it is always light that dispels the darkness. Appropriate means to possess. To possess something means to own and control it. This Scripture is saying that darkness CANNOT possess light.
1 John 1:5 tells us that God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.
Because Jesus is the express image of the Father, Jesus said of Himself in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of life.” Since His Light is in us, we should never be over-whelmed or over-taken by the darkness (or evil) around us.
The Bible oftentimes refers darkness to evil. Evil can never overpower the Light – the power of God. We know this because Isaiah 14:12-13 tells us that when Lucifer tried to exalt himself to sit on God’s throne, God kicked him out of heaven.
As Christians, we have the Light of God (Jesus) within us. We are instructed to walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in ever good work and increase in the knowledge of God. (Colossians 1:10) As we increase in our knowledge of the Word of God, and our faith, we will be able to fulfill Romans 12:21 and overcome evil with good – the goodness of God. So, as you go about your daily living at home and in the workplace, I encourage you to allow the Light of Jesus to shine through your words and actions. We need to see ourselves as a “light” in the darkness rather than being “alone” in the darkness.
