Think On This: God Is Holy And Just

thMost people believe that God is Holy.  The word study at the beginning of my Bible describes the word holy as “set aside for holy purpose, to set apart or to consecrate”.  When applied to God, it means “set apart and therefore sacred, or holy”.  God’s purpose in creating mankind was to have fellowship with him. Adam and Eve had that (holy) relationship with Almighty God until their sin of disobedience broke that fellowship.

Their sin had a catastrophic result in that it separated mankind from the Most Holy God.  Their sin caused the loss of a sinless, perfect, holy nature and they gained a sinful, imperfect and unholy nature.  Therefore, mankind needed access to God restored, but mankind did not have the ability to make that restoration.  A penalty had to be paid for the crime of sin; a Savior was needed and God supplied that Savior in Jesus Christ. Psalm 107:20 tells us that, “He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions”.  John 1:1 tells us that Word was Jesus made in the flesh.  God is holy, righteous, and perfect, and also His Son Jesus.  Jesus’ death on the cross paid the penalty for the sin of the world.  (John 3:15-17) Jesus took our sin and gave us His righteousness.  (2 Corinthians 5:21)

When a person accepts Jesus as Savior they become a child of God and receive right standing with God, which means being able to stand before Him as though we had/have never sinned.  As Christians, we have a holy relationship with God.  Hallelujah!  God offers this Salvation to everyone; no one is exempt.  It doesn’t matter where you live, your family name, past or present problems. In God’s holiness, He is just in that He offers Salvation to everyone through Jesus Christ.

I realize some may think I’m being redundant but it is so very important to understand that we cannot save ourselves. Isaiah 64:6 tells us that our righteousness (good deeds, good thoughts, kindness, sweet words, etc.), are filthy rags compared to the Holiness of Jesus and God the Father.  We need Jesus as Savior.

Our minds may have trouble understanding this but it’s a spiritual truth that is believed.  Believing comes first and then understanding is revealed to our mind.  Our mind can only believe with natural relativity that is based on physics, science, and our natural senses; but our spirit believes with spiritual relativity that is based on what God says.  Everything received of God is by faith.   Accepting Jesus as Savior gives us the positional legal righteous standing with God.  Holy living in obedience to God’s Word gives us good fellowship with God.

Since God is holy, He commands us to also be holy.  God instructs us to sanctify ourselves and be holy as He is holy.  (Leviticus 11:44-45; 19:24; 20:7)   As I mentioned above: to be consecrated means to be devoted solemnly to a purpose.  Our solemn purpose as children of God should be to living according to His Word because He is holy and we are called to be holy.

The dictionary describes holy as worthy of absolute devotion; sacred; having a divine quality; sanctified, consecrated.  To be sanctified means to be free from sin; which happens when we accept Jesus as Savior.  To be consecrated means to devoted solemnly to a purpose.

As children of a Holy and just God, we are to live holy and just lives.  As I said before, accepting Jesus our Savior gives us the position of righteousness before God.  Holy and just living give us good fellowship with Jesus and God.  If you feel your fellowship with God is not where it should be, ask Him about the condition of your heart concerning holiness.

Leviticus 11:44, I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.

Leviticus 19:2, speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: “Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.

Leviticus 20:8, keep my decrees and follow them. I am the Lord, who makes you holy.

Psalm 11:7, the Lord loves righteousness, He loves justice; the upright will see his face.

Psalm 50:6, the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for he is a God of justice.

Psalm 89:14, righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.

Psalm 103:6, the Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.
