The Passover Lamb

Jesus is the Passover Lamb. He was crucified during the Jews Passover celebration mentioned in the Old Testament commemorating their leaving Egypt. It’s called the Passover because God commanded the Israelites to kill a perfect lamb; one without blemish, and wipe the blood of that lamb over door posts of their homes. The “death angel” seeing the blood on the doorposts of homes would pass over that house, but would enter those homes without the bloody doorposts and claim the lives of the firstborn sons in Egypt. This was the last plague that Egypt experienced before Pharoah let God’s people go. (Exodus 11-12)

Move forward a few hundred years and we find the religious leaders of the day accusing Jesus saying, “he made himself the Son of God”, and were demanding that He be crucified. (John 19:7) In the next few verses we see that Jesus was sent before Pilate to be judged, and in verse 11, Jesus answered (Pilate), “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore, the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin”.

We are told in Romans 6:23 that the wages of sin is death. Since Jesus was the perfect Son of God, He had NO sin in him. Therefore, He could be the perfect Lamb without blemish. He could pay the price for all sinful humanity. But death could not take him without any sin. That’s why sin had to be “put” on him. Second Corinthians 5:21 explains it this way: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God”; sin had to be put on him. That says it all!

Jesus became the Lamb of God. (Romans 5:8-9) God gave His Son to die for the sins of the world. (John 3:16-17)

Jesus was the LAST Passover Lamb to be slain for the sins of the world because He did not stay dead. Death could not hold Him! God raised Him from the dead. (Matthew 28:6, Mark 16:6, Luke 24:6) Acts 2:24 tells us, “but God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.”

Just as the blood of the lamb in the Old Testament saved the people of Israel from death, the Blood of Jesus saves us from the sinful nature (that was a result of Adam’s sin in the Garden of Eden).  If you have not already accepted Jesus as Savior, do so now by declaring that you “believe in your heart that Jesus is the Son of God; that He died for your sins, that God raised Him up from death; and because you believe this, you are now saved”. (Romans 10:9-10) To give further understanding of Salvation we read in Romans 5:9, “since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him.” Our redemption is only in Jesus.

I am so very grateful that Jesus was obedient – even to the death on the Cross; to be the Passover Lamb for my sins; and that God raised Him to life again. He is alive forevermore! May you experience the forgiveness of your sins, and enjoy the life abundantly that is in Jesus the Savior.  Happy Resurrection Day!
