Promises That Keep

Promises; everyone has made some; everyone has been given some. Can we trust the promises made to us? Can others trust the promises we have made? I would venture to say sometimes yes and sometimes no. Everyone has had a promise to them broken; and likewise they have broken one. However, there is one person who NEVER breaks his promises – and that is God Almighty. Hallelujah!

A promise is a declaration that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen. However, a promise doesn’t necessarily require certain conduct from both parties. But the Bible uses the word covenant which is a formal agreement or compact; and usually requires certain conduct from both parties.

God promised to make Abram a great nation in Genesis 12:2, but Abram was required to leave the country he lived in. God promised to be with Joshua to bring the children of Israel into the Promised Land, but it was up to Joshua to be strong and courageous and observe to do all the law (Joshua 1:7). God promised to make David king over the children of Israel in 1 Samuel 16:1, 13. God spoke to Hannah through the prophet Eli concerning a child to be born to her. (1 Samuel 1:17, 20).  And the list goes on and on.

In Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6 God promised to send a Savior who would be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. When we jump to the New Testament, we find in the Gospels that the Son, the promised Savior from so long ago arrived (was born) in Bethlehem. (Matthew 1:18-23, Luke 1:26-35, John 1:1, 14) God kept His word to send a Redeemer.

Second Corinthians 1:20 teaches us that all the promises of God are yes and in Him (Jesus) Amen, to the glory of God through us. Some Bible versions say by us or for us. All these promises that we’ve talked about have been met in Jesus. The one promise that has not been fulfilled yet is the promise in Acts 1:11 that Jesus will return in the same manner that He was taken up into heaven. Are you ready for this last promise? If not, you can be by accepting Jesus as your Savior. Jesus said in John 3:3 that no one can see the kingdom of God except he/she be born again. We are told John 3:16-17 that “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” God will not reject you. Romans 10:9-10 explains how to accept Jesus as Savior: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Hebrews 13:8 teaches that Jesus is the same yesterday, and today, and forever; so we can trust that God is keeping His promises today. All we need to do is believe His Word. We can trust whatever God says because He is true to His Word.
